History
Malbek (Мальбэк) is a Russian pop-rap duo from Moscow formed in late 2016 by childhood friends Roman Varnin and Alexander Pyanykh. The pair originally worked together making music videos for other artists before turning to writing their own material. Varnin, born in Moscow in 1993, coined the group's name after the Malbec grape variety, evoking the tart, distinctive character they wanted their sound to have — a blend of pop, rap, soul, and electronic production. The duo's breakthrough came in 2017-2018 through a series of collaborations with singer Suzanna, whose vocals featured on their best-known tracks, "Gipnozy" ("Hypnoses") and "Ravnodushie" ("Indifference"). Their 2018 album "Novoe Iskusstvo" ("New Art") reached the top 20 of Apple Music's year-end chart for Russian-language releases, with both singles landing in the platform's top 24 tracks of the year. The partnership had a very public end: at a Moscow concert in October 2018, Suzanna announced on stage that she was leaving Varnin, throwing her microphone down mid-show. Malbek has continued releasing music since.
