History

Laima Vaikule (born 1954 in Latvia) spent years in Riga and Jūrmala variety programmes before the all-Union audience found her, which is why her act never looked like anyone else's on Soviet television. She arrived with cabaret staging, dance training and a sense of how to hold a stage rather than simply stand at a microphone. The breakthrough was «Вернисаж», a 1986 duet with Valery Leontiev written by Raimonds Pauls to words by Ilya Reznik; «Ещё не вечер» kept the same register and became the second number audiences expect from her. The voice is quiet and slightly husky, the phrasing closer to jazz than to the Soviet ballad school, the Latvian accent left in place. Arrangements favour brushes, piano and small-band swing over the string mass most estrada singers of the period worked with. She has recorded and toured without long pauses since, in Latvia and in Russian-speaking markets.
