History

Born in Kyiv, Lyubov Uspenskaya left for the United States at the end of the 1970s and sang in the Russian restaurants of New York, the circuit where emigrant chanson took shape as a repertoire for its own audience. She came back to Russia in the early 1990s with the manner already finished. The voice sits low and slightly smoked, phrased lazily and behind the beat, over restaurant jazz: live keys, saxophone, brushes, sometimes a violin. «Кабриолет» and «Пропадаю я» established her as the leading female voice in the genre, and the part has not changed since. The subject matter stays narrow on purpose, love and money and leaving, delivered as though she were telling it across a table rather than projecting it from a stage. Much of the catalogue travelled on cassette and through taxi radios long before it reached rotation.
