History

Her father, the composer Yuri Varum, wrote and produced most of Anzhelika Varum's early repertoire, and that pairing gave her records a consistency few estrada singers of the period had. «Художник, что рисует дождь» put her on television at the start of the 1990s. «Городок» (1994) made the voice a household one: a waltz dressed in pre-war nostalgia, sung in a thin, breathy, deliberately girlish timbre placed very close to the microphone. The timbre does the work that power does elsewhere. It stays high and light, avoids belting entirely, and lets the retro arrangements carry the weight: accordion, brushed drums, muted brass. She moved toward duets and Latin-leaning rhythms once she began recording and performing with Leonid Agutin, whom she married. Three decades on, the restraint is unchanged: a small voice, a close microphone, and arrangements that finish the sentence for it.
