History

Larisa Dolina brought a jazz singer's technique into Soviet and Russian pop. She began in orchestras and ensembles rather than on television, and that schooling stayed audible: a big contralto with a real low register, phrasing that sits behind the beat, improvised turns at the ends of lines, and an ease with brass arrangements that most estrada singers never developed. Through the 1980s she worked across jazz programmes and film songs before becoming one of the central voices of Russian pop in the decade that followed. Pogoda v dome, which uses the weather in a house as a way of talking about a marriage, became the song she is identified with and one of the most played Russian records of the 1990s. Her stage manner is unhurried and assured, closer to a bandleader than to a pop star, and she has returned to jazz repertoire repeatedly between pop albums. The voice is recognisable by its weight: a full, slightly smoky tone that never thins out at the top of a phrase.
