History

She came out of New Jersey and out of the Fugees, whose second album The Score (1996) sold in the millions and made Killing Me Softly inescapable. The solo record followed in 1998. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill took five Grammys including Album of the Year, the most won by a woman in a single night to that point, and it moved between rapped verses and full sung choruses without treating the two as separate jobs. Part of it was cut at Tuff Gong in Kingston with a live band, which is why the reggae and rocksteady pull underneath tracks like Doo Wop (That Thing) sounds played rather than sampled. Ex-Factor is the other half of her range, a slow soul confession built on an organ and very little else. MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 (2002) put her alone with an acoustic guitar. No second studio album has followed.
