History
Korroziya Metalla built its reputation on speed, distortion and deliberate provocation. The band came out of the Moscow metal underground of the mid 1980s, when heavy music in the USSR lived in rented houses of culture and on tape copies passed hand to hand, and it took the thrash template of the period, fast downstroked riffs, shouted vocals, short songs, and filled it with crude street humour and slogans instead of the usual apocalyptic imagery. Its frontman, known as Pauk, turned the shows into a spectacle of costumes, banners and staged shock, which kept the group in scandal columns as often as in the music press. The records stay blunt on purpose: a thin trebly guitar tone, a rhythm section that pushes rather than swings, choruses written to be roared back by a hall. Russkaya Vodka became the one song people outside the scene knew, a drinking anthem with a thrash engine under it. For Russian metal the band matters less as a technical benchmark than as proof that the genre could be loud, local and unembarrassed in its own language.
