History
Jeff Beck made the electric guitar sound like a voice, bending and shaping notes with the whammy bar and the volume knob. The English guitarist first came to attention in the Yardbirds in the mid-1960s, taking over from Eric Clapton, then led the Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood before a short run in Beck, Bogert & Appice. The turn that matters for fusion came in the mid-1970s. Blow by Blow, produced by George Martin in 1975, dropped vocals entirely and set Beck's lead lines over funk and jazz-rock grooves, including a slow, aching reading of Stevie Wonder's Cause We've Ended as Lovers. Wired followed in 1976 with Jan Hammer's synthesizers and Narada Michael Walden on drums, pushing the sound closer to Mahavishnu-style fusion. Both records made instrumental guitar music a mainstream proposition. Beck kept working for decades and died in 2023. His playing is recognisable by its fingerpicked attack, wide vibrato, harmonics and phrasing that sounds sung.
