History

Mahavishnu Orchestra played jazz-rock at a volume and speed jazz had rarely heard. John McLaughlin formed the band in New York in 1971 after sessions with Miles Davis and time in Tony Williams' Lifetime, taking the name from the spiritual title his guru had given him. The first lineup brought together strong players: Jan Hammer on keyboards, Jerry Goodman on violin, Rick Laird on bass and Billy Cobham on drums. The Inner Mounting Flame in 1971 and Birds of Fire in 1973 set the template: long unison lines between guitar and violin, shifting metres borrowed from Indian music, sudden drops into quiet, almost devotional passages and then back to full force. McLaughlin's double-neck guitar and Cobham's drumming became symbols of the new fusion. Tensions split the original band in 1973, and McLaughlin later led new versions with Jean-Luc Ponty among others. The early records remain the reference point, known for their intensity, virtuoso interplay and a spiritual seriousness rare in rock.
