History

Billy Cobham is the drummer who showed that jazz could hit as hard as rock without losing its swing. Born in Panama and raised in New York, he came up through the city's jazz scene, played with the early fusion band Dreams and recorded with Miles Davis around the time of A Tribute to Jack Johnson. His name spread fast as the engine of the first Mahavishnu Orchestra, where his double bass drums and open-handed attack drove John McLaughlin's odd-metre themes at full volume. Spectrum, his 1973 solo debut, turned that energy into a record of his own, with Jan Hammer on keyboards and Tommy Bolin on guitar; its track Stratus later found a second life through hip-hop and trip-hop samples. Crosswinds followed in 1974 with a looser, more melodic feel. His signature is the sheer density of his playing: rolling tom fills, rapid-fire snare figures and a huge kit that still keeps a clear, funky pocket under the soloists.
