History
Jamiroquai are an English funk and acid jazz band formed in London in 1992, fronted by singer Jay Kay, who has remained the group's only constant member through numerous line-up changes. Rooted in London's early-1990s acid jazz scene, the band built their sound on live funk grooves before folding in disco, rock, electronic and Latin influences on later records. Early members included bassist Stuart Zender, keyboardist Toby Smith and didgeridoo player Wallis Buchanan; the current lineup includes drummer Derrick McKenzie and bassist Paul Turner. Jamiroquai's albums Emergency on Planet Earth (1993), Synkronized (1999) and A Funk Odyssey (2001) all reached number one in the UK, as did the 1998 single "Deeper Underground." Their 1996 album Travelling Without Moving earned a Guinness World Record as the best-selling funk album ever, while its single "Virtual Insanity" won Video of the Year at the 1997 MTV VMAs and a Grammy in 1998. Jamiroquai were reportedly the third-best-selling UK act of the 1990s, behind only the Spice Girls and Oasis, having sold over 26 million albums worldwide.
