History
Wham! was an English pop duo formed in Bushey, Hertfordshire, in 1981 by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, who had met as schoolboys at Bushey Meads School in 1975. Signed first to the small Innervision label and later to Epic, they built a sound rooted in funk, soul and disco-pop, paired with a breezy, youthful image. Their debut album, Fantastic (1983), topped the UK chart and tackled unemployment and teenage restlessness, while 1984's Make It Big made them global stars, hitting number one in both Britain and the US. US Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers included "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go," "Careless Whisper," and "Everything She Wants." Their holiday single "Last Christmas" (1984), with proceeds donated to charity, has become one of the best-selling and most-played Christmas songs ever, despite never officially topping the UK chart at release. In 1985, Wham! became the first Western pop group to give a major concert in China, a widely publicized visit seen as a milestone in cultural relations. The duo disbanded in 1986 after the farewell single "The Edge of Heaven" and a live send-off concert titled The Final.
