History
George Benson built his name as a jazz guitarist of formidable speed and clarity, then became one of the most successful crossover artists of his time by adding a smooth, agile singing voice. From Pittsburgh, he was a child performer before joining organist Brother Jack McDuff's group in the early 1960s, and his clean, octave-rich soloing drew comparisons with Wes Montgomery. Breezin' in 1976 changed his course: the mostly instrumental album, with his vocal on Leon Russell's "This Masquerade", reached the top of the pop album chart, a rare feat for a jazz record. Give Me the Night, produced by Quincy Jones in 1980, pushed him further into polished dance-floor soul, and In Your Eyes continued that line into the mid-1980s. His signature is the habit of scatting in unison with his own guitar lines, voice and strings doubling the same melody. The records are easy to place: warm, glossy arrangements, a relaxed tenor and guitar phrases that stay fluent even at quick tempos.
