History
Boston is an American rock band formed in 1975 in Boston, Massachusetts, built around guitarist, songwriter, and producer Tom Scholz. An MIT-trained engineer who worked by day at Polaroid, Scholz spent years recording meticulous demos alone in his home basement studio before Epic Records signed the project in 1975. Vocalist Brad Delp became his key creative partner, with drummers Jim Masdea and Sib Hashian and guitarist Barry Goudreau rounding out the lineup that fronted the music publicly. Their self-titled debut album, released August 25, 1976, and co-produced by Scholz and John Boylan, introduced the layered, heavily engineered "Boston sound": stacked guitar overdubs, Hammond organ, and polished arena-rock hooks, most famously on "More Than a Feeling." The record became one of the best-selling debut albums in American rock history, eventually certified 17x Platinum. Scholz has said he expected the album to be forgotten within a year of release, making its lasting impact one of rock's more unlikely success stories.
