History
REO Speedwagon formed in 1967 in Champaign, Illinois, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where keyboardist Neal Doughty and drummer Alan Gratzer held their first rehearsal. The band's name comes from the REO Speed Wagon, a 1915 truck designed by Ransom E. Olds, spelled out letter by letter rather than said as one word. Early lineups shifted often until guitarist Gary Richrath joined in 1970, writing the band's signature track "Ridin' the Storm Out," and singer Kevin Cronin settled into the frontman role by the mid-1970s. Signed to Epic Records, the band built a Midwest arena-rock and soft-rock following through the 1970s before breaking nationally with 1980's Hi Infidelity, which produced four Top 40 singles and sold over 10 million copies. REO Speedwagon later topped the charts with "Keep On Loving You" and "Can't Fight This Feeling," selling more than 40 million records overall. The band announced the end of live touring after January 2025, closing out a run of nearly six decades.
