History
Bonnie Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins on 8 June 1951 in Skewen, Wales, emerged from the mid-1970s Swansea club circuit into one of rock and pop's most distinctive voices. Signed to RCA after a scout heard her performing under the stage name Sherene Davis, she broke through with 1977's The World Starts Tonight and the hit "It's a Heartache," which reached number four in the UK and number three on the US Billboard Hot 100. Her defining moment came in 1983, when songwriter-producer Jim Steinman gave her "Total Eclipse of the Heart," a UK number one and the centerpiece of her chart-topping album Faster Than the Speed of Night; Steinman also wrote her hit "Holding Out for a Hero." She found renewed European success in the 1990s with producer Dieter Bohlen on "Bitterblue," and represented the United Kingdom at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest. Tyler's trademark husky voice reportedly resulted from throat surgery in her youth. She released 18 studio albums across five decades, earning three Grammy nominations, and died on 8 July 2026 in Portugal at age 75.
