History

The Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles are a community of contemplative nuns whose recordings carry the sound of their daily prayer: unaccompanied female voices singing chant, polyphony and old hymns, in Latin and in English. The community follows the Rule of Saint Benedict, keeps the traditional Latin liturgy and lives at the Priory of Our Lady of Ephesus in rural Missouri, which gives the albums their titles. The sisters began releasing records in the 2010s, and Advent at Ephesus (2012), Angels and Saints at Ephesus (2013) and Lent at Ephesus (2014) found an audience well beyond church circles. Unlike the male monastic choirs that dominate chant recordings, their singing is bright and clear, recorded with a close, warm sound, and the repertoire moves easily between plainchant and simple harmonised Marian songs. Each album is built around a particular season or feast of the church year. What stays with a listener is the pure, gentle blend of women's voices and an unhurried devotional calm.
