History

The Choralschola der Wiener Hofburgkapelle is the Gregorian chant ensemble of the Hofburg chapel in Vienna, the old court chapel of the Habsburgs, where sung Mass has been part of the life of the imperial palace for centuries. The chapel is best known for its Sunday liturgies, which bring together the Vienna Boys' Choir and musicians from the city's leading orchestras, and the schola carries the plainchant side of that tradition: a small group of men's voices singing the Latin propers and hymns in unison. Its recordings, Mystical Chants among them, follow the chant through the feasts and seasons of the church year. The mid-1990s brought a wide public interest in Gregorian chant, and releases of this kind reached listeners far outside Catholic worship. The sound is sober and even, with long, arching lines and little ornament. Nothing here is hurried: only the calm unison of male voices and the spacious, resonant acoustic of a stone chapel.
