History
The choir of monks at the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes is the ensemble most closely tied to the modern revival of Gregorian chant, and its recordings are often treated as a reference for how the repertoire can sound. The Benedictine abbey in the Sarthe region of France was refounded in 1833 by Dom Prosper Guéranger, and over the following decades its monks, among them Dom Joseph Pothier and Dom André Mocquereau, studied medieval manuscripts to restore the chant after centuries of corruption. Their work shaped the official chant books adopted by the Catholic Church in the early twentieth century. The monks began recording in 1930 and kept at it for decades, and their long discography, from Masses for the great feasts to the offices of Holy Week, documents that liturgical practice. The Solesmes style is light, supple and flowing, with carefully shaped phrases rather than heavy, even beats. You hear it in the unison men's voices, the soft dynamics and the resonant acoustic of the abbey church.
