History

Ludovico Einaudi writes piano music built from small repeating cells that shift a note at a time, so a piece seems to stand still while it is in fact moving steadily somewhere else. He trained in Milan and studied with Luciano Berio, then walked away from the modernist vocabulary he had been handed and started writing something far plainer: consonant harmony, a slow pulse, long pedal, almost no display. Critics have argued ever since about whether this counts as classical composition, while listeners settled the question themselves and made him the most streamed artist working anywhere near the form. Albums such as Le Onde, Una Mattina and In a Time Lapse set the template, and cinema carried the pieces further, with directors reaching for his catalogue when a scene needs feeling without instruction. "Nuvole Bianche" and "Experience" are the most played: the first quiet and circular, the second layering strings until the loop turns into something closer to a wave.
