History

The Cistercian Monks of Stift Heiligenkreuz sing Gregorian chant as it sounds in their own liturgy: unaccompanied Latin melody, sung in unison by a community of young and old voices, restrained in dynamics and carried by the long echo of a medieval abbey church. Heiligenkreuz lies in the Vienna Woods south-west of Vienna and was founded in the twelfth century, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited Cistercian monasteries. In 2008 the monks were signed by Universal after the label went looking for a choir of real monks, and Chant: Music for Paradise was recorded in the abbey itself. The album crossed over to the pop charts in Austria, Britain and elsewhere, an unusual result for a record with no production tricks at all. Chant: Amor et Passio (2011) followed, centred on chants about love and the Passion. The appeal lies in plainness: clear, slightly rough male voices, a steady pulse and the space of a working church.
