History
Alabama Shakes played raw, Southern soul rock built around Brittany Howard, whose voice could move from a whisper to a full-throated howl inside a single line. The band formed in Athens, Alabama, with bassist Zac Cockrell, guitarist Heath Fogg and drummer Steve Johnson, and their sound drew on Otis Redding, Memphis soul, garage rock and old blues records rather than on anything current. The debut Boys & Girls (2012) arrived on the back of "Hold On", a slow-burning single that made them one of the most talked-about new American bands of that year. Sound & Color (2015) was a bolder record, with fuzzed guitars, strange textures and more space, and it went to number one on the Billboard 200 and won Grammy awards. The band went quiet after touring that album, and Howard moved on to a solo career. Listeners recognise the Shakes by that voice first, then by the loose, live-in-a-room feel, the churchy chord changes and the way a groove is allowed to simmer before it breaks open.
