History

The Avett Brothers play folk rock with a punk heart: banjo, acoustic guitar, upright bass and cello driven hard, with raw two-part harmonies from brothers Scott and Seth Avett. The band comes from Concord, North Carolina, and grew out of the brothers' earlier rock group Nemo, turning to acoustic music around 2000; bassist Bob Crawford joined in 2001 and cellist Joe Kwon became a core member later in the decade. Years of relentless touring built their following before Emotionalism (2007) brought wider attention and Americana honours. The move to Rick Rubin's American Recordings produced I and Love and You (2009), a more polished, piano-led record that became their mainstream breakthrough, and Rubin stayed on for The Carpenter (2012) and True Sadness (2016). Their writing mixes bluegrass, country, pop melody and rock and roll with plainspoken lyrics about love, family and mortality. Listeners recognise them by the pounding banjo, the brothers' blended voices cracking at full volume and the sudden shifts from hushed ballad to foot-stomping singalong.
