History

Bully is the project of Alicia Bognanno, whose raw, throat-shredding scream sits on top of loud, melodic 1990s-style guitar rock, sweet tunes and ragged noise in the same song. Bognanno studied audio recording, interned at Steve Albini's Electrical Audio studio in Chicago and worked as an engineer in Nashville, where she formed Bully as a trio in 2013. That engineering background shows: she records the band herself, and the sound is dry, direct and physical. The debut Feels Like came out in 2015 on Columbia's Startime International imprint, and Pitchfork singled out her Cobain-like head-scream. Losing, recorded again at Electrical Audio and released by Sub Pop in 2017, was grittier and less polished. After the other members left, Bognanno kept the name and made Sugaregg in 2020 and Lucky for You in 2023 essentially as a solo artist. Her lyrics are blunt and personal, about anxiety, relationships and self-doubt, and the push and pull between pop melody and grunge distortion runs through all of it.
