History

Momma write big, melodic indie rock songs and then bury them in pedal-mashing fuzz, a sound that leans openly on 1990s alternative rock without turning into pastiche. The band was started in 2015 by Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten, friends since school in Los Angeles, who share songwriting and vocals and later moved the project to Brooklyn. Their debut Interloper appeared in 2018, and Two of Me followed in 2020, framed as a concept record about small-town life in an alternate reality. Signing to Polyvinyl brought Household Name in 2022, their breakthrough, with tighter songs about ambition and the strange idea of becoming famous. They then opened shows for Weezer, a fitting pairing given how much they owe to crunchy, hook-first guitar pop. Welcome to My Blue Sky followed in 2025. The intertwined voices of the two founders, the riff-heavy choruses and a slightly ruminative, bittersweet tone under the loud guitars are what give Momma their own identity.
