History

Gary Clark Jr. plays blues guitar on a tone so saturated it sounds close to falling apart, and that fuzz is recognised before any particular lick is. He came up on the club circuit in Austin, Texas, and his records keep that live weight while pulling in soul, hip hop rhythm and psychedelic rock. Bright Lights remains the calling card: a slow, heavy riff, a vocal sliding between low murmur and falsetto, and a solo left deliberately ugly. Numb pushes the distortion further toward rock. This Land turned his writing to direct statement, a level account of being told he does not belong where he lives, set over a loping groove rather than a march. He sings with restraint, closer to soul phrasing than to blues shouting, and the contrast with the guitar is the point. Among younger players he is the modern reference point named most often for blues guitar, and his Grammys came from different categories rather than one lane.
