History
ABBA formed in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972, bringing together Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, who had all separately worked in Swedish pop, rock, and cabaret circles before teaming up (Andersson had played in The Hep Stars, dubbed "the Swedish Beatles"). The quartet built a bright, tightly arranged pop-rock and Europop sound, layered with disco elements as the decade went on. Their 1974 Eurovision Song Contest win with "Waterloo" was Sweden's first Eurovision victory and launched them internationally; further hits followed, including "Dancing Queen," "Mamma Mia," "SOS," and "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)." Both couples in the group married and later divorced, and those personal strains contributed to the band splitting in December 1982. One notable piece of trivia: a Swedish canned-fish company already held the name "Abba," and the band only adopted it after getting the company's permission. ABBA is now credited with over 370 million records sold worldwide, and released new material, the album Voyage, after a surprise 2021 reunion.
