History
Army of Lovers formed in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1987 (some sources say 1986), founded by Alexander Bard, Jean-Pierre Barda, and Camilla Henemark ("La Camilla"), who had previously played together in the band Barbie. Bard and Barda remained constants through the group's many lineup changes, which later included Michaela Dornonville de la Cour (1991-1995) and Dominika Peczynski (from 1992). The band's flamboyant Eurodance/dance-pop sound was matched by an equally flamboyant visual style, with lavish, sexually provocative music videos designed by costumer Camilla Thulin that were sometimes banned from MTV. Their 1991 album Massive Luxury Overdose, featuring the hits "Crucified" (a European top-10 single, number 8 in Sweden) and "Obsession" (number 2 in Sweden, number one on Swedish radio and dance charts), sold roughly 250,000 copies and made them one of Sweden's biggest pop exports of the era. Critic Stephen Dalton memorably compared their sound to "Doctor Zhivago set to a relentless disco beat." Active in waves through 1996, 2001-2009, and 2012 onward, they released their last new material in 2014.
