Style recipe for Suno v5
Wonky
Wonky bass instrumental from the 2010s: detuned synth, wobbly bass, swung drums, playful and dreamy in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
History
Wonky arrived in 2006 as a bright, exuberant counterpoint to the austere sound of UK dubstep and grime. Its defining trait sits in the timing: producers left their beats unquantised, abandoning the metronomic grid of most electronic music, so the rhythm lurches and sways. On top go garish synth tones, heavy sub-bass and a magpie mix of hip hop, electro-funk, 8-bit, jazz fusion, glitch and crunk. BBC Music described it as slightly out-of-phase beats and synths that wobble woozily, as if warped after being left out in the sun. American producers J Dilla and Madlib were a key influence, and some artists leaned more on instrumental hip hop than on dubstep. Flying Lotus carried the sound in the United States, while Glasgow, linked with Hudson Mohawke, counts as one of its cradles, and there the style is also called aquacrunk, largely thanks to Rustie; Joker and Zomby are also tied to the style. The heavy sub-bass has even been linked to ketamine, which spread through UK clubs in the dubstep era. Fittingly for a word that means unstable, several artists filed under it have rejected the label wonky altogether.
