History

Joker is the Bristol producer Liam McLean, one of the names most closely tied to purple sound, a strand of late 2000s dubstep that swapped dark, minimal pressure for bright, detuned synth leads, funk and G-funk inspired melodies and a wobbling, playful low end. His tracks are video-game colourful: chunky square-wave hooks, sliding pitch bends and heavy bass that still leaves room for a tune. He came up very young in the Bristol scene, put out early singles on his own label, Kapsize Recordings, and also released on the London label Hyperdub. His debut album The Vision came out in 2011 through 4AD and brought in vocalists and a more song-shaped approach, while The Mainframe followed in 2015 on Kapsize. Joker sat in the same colourful corner of UK bass as Rustie, and together they helped define what purple meant as a label. Since the late 2010s he has also built a strong reputation as a mixing and mastering engineer. Listeners recognise his work by the glossy, off-key synth melodies riding on top of a slow, rolling half-step beat.
