Old School Hip-Hop

History
Old-school hip-hop, first known as disco-rap, is the earliest commercially recorded hip-hop, the style of the years to about 1983. Live, DJs used disco and funk breaks such as Chic's "Good Times"; on record, the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" had a live band replay them. Grand Wizzard Theodore pioneered scratching in 1975, and Grandmaster Flash built "Adventures on the Wheels of Steel" entirely on turntables. Rapping was simple, few syllables a bar at moderate tempo, mostly about parties, with shout-outs to home boroughs. Kool Moe Dee's more complex rhymes beat Busy Bee Starski in December 1981, turning the MC from crowd-pleasing comedian into storyteller, a shift KRS-One also credits. "The Message" in 1982, written by Duke Bootee and Melle Mel and credited to Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, brought social commentary into hip-hop, opening the way for Public Enemy and N.W.A. After Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock" the same year, electro-funk built on the Roland TR-808 ruled production until 1986. Later the sampler and Eric B. & Rakim's "Eric B. Is President" brought the original breakbeat back, the sound now called boom bap. Some trace old school back to Pigmeat Markham's "Here Comes the Judge" from 1968.
