History
Compton, 1986: Eazy-E put up the money, Dr. Dre and DJ Yella brought the drum machines, Ice Cube and MC Ren wrote most of the words. Straight Outta Compton came out on Ruthless in 1988 and sold past platinum with almost no radio behind it, which is the part people forget. Dre built the beats from funk breaks, sirens and hard scratching, and a single track could pass through four distinct voices, posse-cut style. "Fuck tha Police" drew a warning letter from the FBI. Ice Cube left in 1989 over royalties; Efil4zaggin followed in 1991 and went to number one on the Billboard 200 while the group was already coming apart. Almost everything downstream starts here: Dre's solo career, Death Row, the Ruthless roster, Cube's run as a writer and actor. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
