Style recipe for Suno v5
Chopped and Screwed
Chopped screwed from the 2000s: slowed sub kick, pitched down vocal, syrupy synth keys, hypnotic and menacing in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
History
Chopped and screwed came out of Houston, where rap had always moved slower than the fast Miami bass and Memphis sounds elsewhere in the South. DJ Screw found the style in the late 1980s, by his former manager's account by accident while hanging out with friends: dropping a record's pitch hard gave a heavy, mellow sound that pushed the lyrics forward until they played like storytelling. The screw part slows a song to 60-70 beats per minute; the chop part adds skipped beats, scratches, stop-time and reworked fragments. At first it was laid-back driving music heard only in South Houston, then Michael “5000” Watts carried it to the north side in the mid-1990s, and Napster spread it much wider by the end of the decade. Lean became tied to its image, though Screw insisted that kids, moms and dads who neither drank nor smoked bought his tapes. He was found dead in his studio on November 16, 2000. OG Ron C's Chopstars carry the craft on, with official releases alongside Brent Faiyaz and Don Toliver. Its internet grandchild, slowed and reverb, took off in 2017 when a remix of Lil Uzi Vert's “20 Min” passed a million YouTube views.
