History
Cantopop, pop sung in Cantonese, took shape in Hong Kong in the 1970s, but its roots reach back to Shanghai, where Western-influenced popular song arrived in the 1920s; from the 1950s waves of emigrants left Shanghai for Hong Kong, and many first-generation Cantopop artists came from there. In the 1960s Hong Kong listeners preferred Elvis Presley, Johnny Mathis and The Beatles, and Cantonese song was seen as old-fashioned. Television changed that: drama theme songs such as “A Marriage of Laughter and Tears” topped local charts, and the theme to Games Gamblers Play made Sam Hui famous, whom some call the first Cantopop star. Billboard correspondent Hans Ebert, who had coined “Cantorock” in 1974, switched to “Cantopop” in 1978 as the sound softened toward soft rock. The 1980s were the golden age of Leslie Cheung, Anita Mui, Jacky Cheung and Andy Lau, and even Teresa Teng, queen of Mandarin song, crossed over. In the mid-1980s band boom Beyond left the deepest mark; its leader Wong Ka Kui died in 1993. Cantonese is tonal, so a shift in pitch changes a word's meaning, which keeps the loose inflection of Western singing out. The genre slowly declined in the 2000s.
