History
Nederpop, a blend of Nederland and pop, is the Dutch name for pop music made by Dutch bands and artists. The word was invented by the mid-1970s to describe a scene of the 1960s and 1970s that had started drawing attention far beyond the Netherlands, carried by Shocking Blue, Golden Earring and Focus. Most of those bands sang in English or played instrumentals, though a few worked only in Dutch. Much of their audience came through offshore pirate stations aimed at the Netherlands, among them Veronica, Mi Amigo, Atlantis and Northsea International. The seventies roster ran wide: Earth and Fire, George Baker, Luv', Pussycat, Teach-In, Herman Brood, Kayak, BZN. In the early 1980s the term got a second life and a new meaning. The huge success of Doe Maar, singing in Dutch, opened the door to a sudden wave of Dutch-language pop, and the Frank Boeijen Groep, Het Goede Doel, VOF de Kunst, the Dolly Dots and Mai Tai followed. Later names include De Dijk, Bløf, Acda & de Munnik and Osdorp Posse, while Normaal in Low German, Rowwen Hèze in Limburgish and Twarres in West Frisian took nederpop into regional languages.
