History

Beyond played rock in Cantonese at a time when Hong Kong pop ran on soft ballads and cover versions, and that choice is most of the reason the band still matters across the Chinese-speaking world. The guitars are clean and melodic rather than heavy, the arrangements are built around a chorus a crowd can carry unaccompanied, and the lyrics deal with conviction, struggle and loyalty instead of romance. Boundless Oceans, Vast Skies is the clearest case: a slow build, a plain statement about freedom and the cost of holding on to it, and a melody that has been sung at rallies, memorials and football terraces for decades. Glorious Years turned the same approach outward, towards apartheid and racial injustice. The band's frontman, Wong Ka Kui, died in 1993 after an accident in Japan, and the group continued without him, though the songs from his years remain the ones people know. What a listener recognises is earnestness delivered straight, with no irony anywhere in it.
