History
G.E.M. sings with a large, hard-pushed voice built for the top of a chorus, and she has written and co-written her own material since she was a teenager, which was unusual for a Hong Kong pop singer of her generation. She started in Cantopop, then moved toward Mandarin and a bigger, almost orchestral arrangement style. Pao Mo is the template: a piano-led ballad that begins close to a whisper and climbs into a belted final chorus, with the image of a bubble holding the whole lyric together. Her run on the Chinese television singing competition I Am a Singer made her a household name on the mainland, above all her reading of Beyond's Xi Huan Ni, which recast a Cantonese rock standard as an arena ballad. Light Years Away, written for a film, travelled furthest, a wide chorus with the melody sitting high in her range. Listeners recognise her by volume and breath control, and by a habit of holding a song back for two minutes before releasing it.
