History
Jay Chou changed what a Mandarin pop record could sound like by folding R&B phrasing, hip hop rhythm and classical Chinese instruments into the same songs. His singing is famously indistinct, syllables run together and swallowed, which drew complaints early on and then became the thing everyone imitated. He writes his own melodies and produces his own records, and his long collaboration with the lyricist Vincent Fang produced the zhongguofeng songs he is best known for. Qing Hua Ci sets a pentatonic melody over strings and a soft beat and takes blue and white porcelain as its central image. Dao Xiang uses a rural childhood as a way into a song about slowing down. Ye Qu runs a minor key piano line against a fast rhythm track. He also acts and directs, and his concerts fill stadiums across the Chinese speaking world. For anyone who grew up in Taiwan or mainland China in the 2000s, his records are the common reference point.
