History

Faye Wong sings Cantopop and Mandopop with a detachment that the genres were not built for, and that distance is the whole appeal. Her voice is light and breathy, full of small hiccups, glides and swallowed syllables, and she uses silence as freely as she uses melody. She grew up in Beijing and made her name in Hong Kong, moving between Cantonese and Mandarin without changing her manner in either. Meng Zhong Ren, a cover of a Western alternative rock song, is where the influence of dream pop on her singing is most obvious, and it reached a wide audience through Wong Kar-wai's Chungking Express, in which she also acted. Hong Dou is the opposite pole, a restrained Mandarin ballad that holds back almost to the end. Eyes on Me, sung in English as the theme to a Final Fantasy game, carried her voice to listeners who had never heard a Chinese pop record. Underneath the mainstream framing, the phrasing is closer to art pop than to ballad singing.
