History
Wang Leehom came into Mandopop with a conservatory training and actually used it, arranging his own records, playing several instruments on them, and writing across styles instead of settling into ballads. The idea most associated with him is a deliberate mixing of Chinese traditional material, folk melody, operatic inflection, instruments such as the erhu, with R&B, hip hop and rock production. He named the approach and built whole albums around it, and it pushed Mandopop toward treating Chinese sources as living material rather than decoration. Kiss Goodbye is the big ballad, sung with the restraint that keeps that kind of song from turning sentimental. Wei Yi is the up-tempo side. Yi Ran Ai Ni spread across the Chinese-speaking world as a wedding standard. Golden Melody Awards followed, several of them, and for most of the 2000s he was among the handful of performers whose records defined the mainstream.
