History

Young the Giant play warm, guitar-led indie rock with a pop sense of melody and a singer who can move from a croon to a full-throated shout. The band formed in Irvine, Southern California, first performing as The Jakes before a lineup change and a new name, with Sameer Gadhia as frontman. Their self-titled debut came out on Roadrunner Records, a label better known for metal, and produced "My Body" and "Cough Syrup", two alternative radio hits that defined their early sound: chiming guitars, surf-tinged rhythms and anthemic climaxes. Mind over Matter pushed toward bigger, more polished arrangements, and Home of the Strange turned to questions of identity and the immigrant experience in America, a theme close to Gadhia and several bandmates. In the 2010s alternative scene they stood between heartland-sized rock and indie pop, less electronic than many peers. A listener recognises them by Gadhia's expressive, soaring vocal, interlocking clean guitars, a hint of California sunshine in the rhythm and songs that build slowly to a cathartic chorus.
