History
Grouplove play loud, joyful indie pop rock built on gang vocals, shouted hooks and a sense that everyone on stage is singing at once. The band formed in Los Angeles, but its roots go back to an artists' residency on the Greek island of Crete, where Hannah Hooper and Christian Zucconi first played with the future members. Hooper and Zucconi share lead vocals, and the contrast between her bright delivery and his raspier voice drives most of their songs. "Tongue Tied" from the debut Never Trust a Happy Song became their best-known track after it was used in an Apple advertisement, and "Ways to Go" from Spreading Rumours kept them on alternative radio. Big Mess continued the formula with bigger production and more synths. In the early 2010s they belonged to the wave of festival-friendly indie bands that favoured euphoria over cool detachment, with colourful visuals and chaotic live shows to match. A listener recognises them by male and female voices trading lines, jangling guitars, handclap energy and choruses that sound written for a crowd.
