History

Walk the Moon make synth-bright indie pop rock with a strong pull toward 1980s new wave: danceable drums, keyboard hooks and choruses built for singing along. The band comes from Cincinnati, Ohio, and grew around singer and keyboardist Nicholas Petricca, taking its name from the Police song "Walking on the Moon". Early on they became known for face paint at their shows, which fans adopted too, and for the single "Anna Sun", which spread through indie blogs and college radio before the band's major label self-titled album. Their breakthrough came with "Shut Up and Dance" from Talking Is Hard, a song that crossed from alternative radio into mainstream pop and became a major hit of the mid-2010s. What If Nothing followed with a darker, more personal tone. In the 2010s indie scene they sat on the pop end, closer to dance music than to guitar introspection. A listener recognises them by bouncing synth riffs, a high, eager lead vocal and big, nostalgic choruses that sound designed for a crowded floor.
