2010s baritone chamber indie-rock from the 2010s: triplet-over-duple piano, polyrhythmic snare figures, arpeggiated clean guitar, melancholic and anthemic in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History

The National build songs around two fixed elements: Matt Berninger's baritone, which rarely rises and often sounds like someone talking himself through an anxiety, and Bryan Devendorf's drumming, which fills the space with restless patterns that refuse to settle into a simple backbeat. Two sets of brothers, the Devendorfs and the Dessners, make up the rest, and the arrangements favour piano, brushed guitar, horns and slow accumulation over any obvious hook. Fake Empire opens with a piano figure in two rhythms at once, a good description of how the whole band works. Bloodbuzz Ohio is the closest they come to a stadium song, driven by drums the whole way. I Need My Girl strips everything back to a guitar figure and a vocal, and shows how little they need. The lyrics deal in middle-class dread, marriage and self-disgust, often funny on the page and mournful when sung. Sleep Well Beast won the Grammy for Best Alternative Album in 2018.
