History

Thunder carried the blues-based British hard rock of Free and Bad Company into the 1990s, at a time when that sound was deeply unfashionable. The band formed in London in 1989 from the remains of Terraplane, with singer Danny Bowes, guitarist and songwriter Luke Morley and drummer Harry James at its core. Their debut, Backstreet Symphony, arrived in 1990 and the same summer they played the Monsters of Rock festival at Donington, an early show that did a lot to establish them. Singles such as Dirty Love, Love Walked In and A Better Man made the UK charts, and the album Laughing on Judgement Day reached number two there in 1992. The music rests on Morley's warm, crunchy riffs, a rolling shuffle feel and Bowes's soulful, full-throated voice, with ballads sitting next to the swaggering rockers. The band split and returned more than once, reforming in 2002 and again from 2011, and later albums such as Rip It Up in 2017 returned them to the upper end of the UK chart.
