History

Cast played bright, guitar-driven Britpop with a Merseyside lilt: jangling chords, big sing-along choruses and John Power's reedy, optimistic voice at the front. Power had been the bass player in the La's, and after leaving that band he formed Cast in Liverpool in the early 1990s, this time as singer, guitarist and chief songwriter. The debut album All Change arrived in 1995, right in the middle of the Britpop boom, and produced a string of hit singles, including "Alright", "Sandstorm", "Walkaway" and "Finetime", which put the band among the most commercially successful guitar groups of that moment. Mother Nature Calls followed in 1997 with more hits, among them "Free Me" and "Guiding Star", and a slightly broader, more soulful arrangement palette. Later records moved further from the classic sound, and the band split before re-forming years afterwards. What connects Cast to the La's is a love of melody rooted in 1960s beat music, and listeners recognise them by chiming acoustic and electric guitars, upbeat tempos and choruses written for whole crowds to sing.
