History
The Boo Radleys started in the fog of shoegaze and ended up with one of Britpop's brightest pop hits, and the road between those two points is their story. The band came from Wallasey on the Wirral and took its name from the recluse in To Kill a Mockingbird. Martin Carr wrote the songs and Sice Rowbottom sang them. After early records on Action and Rough Trade they moved to Creation, where their sound grew from walls of feedback into something far more ambitious. Giant Steps in 1993 mixed noise guitar with brass, dub basslines, psychedelia and sweet melodies, and it won Select's album of the year. Two years later "Wake Up Boo!" became their only Top 10 single, and the album Wake Up! went to number one. They answered that success with the deliberately abrasive C'mon Kids in 1996, and after Kingsize in 1998 the band broke up early in 1999. They returned in 2021 without Carr. The Boo Radleys are recognised by restless arrangements, sudden changes of texture and melodies that stay sunny even under heavy distortion.
