History
The Bug is the sound of a sound system pushed to its limit: distorted sub-bass, crushing digital dancehall rhythms and MCs riding on top like they are shouting through a storm. The Bug is the main project of Kevin Martin, a British producer whose earlier work in the band God and in Techno Animal with Justin Broadrick came from industrial noise and experimental dub. London Zoo, released on Ninja Tune in 2008, brought that intensity to grime and dubstep, with vocalists such as Flowdan, Warrior Queen and Tippa Irie turning tracks like Skeng and Poison Dart into bruising anthems about the city. Angels & Devils split into two sides, one hazy and slow, one violent, and Fire returned to raw MC-led pressure. Martin is also part of King Midas Sound, where the same bass goes soft and melancholic. He is heard as a bridge between noise, dub and bass music. A listener recognises The Bug by overdriven bass that feels physical, slow ragga rhythms, clanging metallic hits and hoarse, confrontational vocals.
