History

Kode9 made dubstep sound haunted: skeletal rhythms, sickly detuned synths, sub-bass that hangs rather than drops, and a feeling of the city at night seen through fog. Kode9 is Steve Goodman, a Scottish-born producer, DJ and academic, who founded the Hyperdub label in 2004. Hyperdub became one of the most important labels in British electronic music, releasing Burial's early records and later bringing footwork, UK funky and odd pop into the same frame. His own albums map that journey. Memories of the Future, made with the poet and vocalist The Spaceape, set dread-heavy spoken word over slow, dub-deep grooves. Black Sun, again with Spaceape, was faster and more synthetic, and Nothing moved further into footwork-influenced rhythm and loss, shaped by the deaths of Spaceape and DJ Rashad. Goodman is also the author of the book Sonic Warfare, about sound as a force. A listener recognises Kode9 by eerie, minor-key tones, clipped percussion, and a mood somewhere between dread and melancholy.
