History
Digital Mystikz shaped the deep, meditative side of dubstep: half-step drums, wide open space and sub-bass designed to be felt on a big sound system rather than heard on headphones. The duo is Mala and Coki, from Norwood in South London. Together with Loefah and Sgt Pokes they ran the DMZ label and the DMZ night, which began in March 2005 at Mass in Brixton and became one of the central gatherings of the early scene. Releases such as 'Pathways' and 'Ugly' carried dub and reggae influence into the new sound, and 'Anti War Dub' later appeared in the film Children of Men. Mary Anne Hobbs championed them on BBC Radio 1 after hearing them at DMZ. Each member also built a separate path: Mala through his Deep Medi Musik label, his 2010 album Return II Space on DMZ and the Mala in Cuba project, Coki through harder, rolling tracks. Listeners recognise their work by patient arrangements, dub echoes and bass weight that dominates the room.
